U.S. Aid Freeze Puts Millions at Risk: VOICE Director Maria Groenewald Speaks to Italian News Agency DIRE

In an interview with Italian news agency Dire, Maria Groenewald, Director of VOICE, warned that the U.S. suspension of foreign aid could have catastrophic global consequences, leaving millions without essential support.

The 90-day aid freeze, ordered by President Donald Trump, has put humanitarian programs at risk, with no alternative funding in sight. The U.S. accounted for 42% of global humanitarian aid in 2024, compared to just 8% from the EU, making the impact of this suspension severe.

"This is an unprecedented situation," Groenewald told Dire. "From one day to the next, funding for life-saving aid has been blocked. The EU must step up—not only to support those affected but also to reshape global humanitarian funding for the future."

Groenewald urged EU leaders to take action, both diplomatically and financially, to ensure aid reaches those who need it most.
