Dear EC President: European NGOs Call for Stronger Commitment to Humanitarian Aid, Development and Climate Action

Together with a group of European NGOs we have sent an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging her to prioritize a well-resourced budget for humanitarian aid, development and climate action in the upcoming communication on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The letter stresses the importance of preserving the distinct purposes of external action instruments and rejecting the proposed merger that could jeopardize the EU's credibility and long-term impact as a global partner.
The signatories highlight the EU’s role as a beacon of principled leadership, particularly in a shifting global landscape.
"Humanitarian action must remain impartial, neutral, and independent to maintain trust in conflict zones. Development funding needs long-term planning to foster sustainable development and peace," reads the letter, which calls for strategic and predictable EU engagement with global partners.
This collective appeal from 48 organizations signals the urgency of maintaining robust and dedicated funding to ensure that the EU continues to lead on development, climate action, and humanitarian issues with effectiveness and credibility.
