The urgent need to increase local food production in Myanmar to ensure food security | VOICE Out Loud #38

In the latest VOICE Out Loud #38, published in December 2024, we took a look at the impact of flooding in Myanmar, challenges in local food production, mounting pressures on local farmers, and the urgent need for support in local agriculture.
In early September 2024, an extremely destructive tropical cyclone, Typhoon Yagi, caused devastating floods and landslides across Myanmar, affecting close to a million people. Already struggling with conflict and insecurity, the country now faces worsening food insecurity as transport disruptions, soaring fuel prices, and broken supply chains make access to food increasingly difficult. With international aid focused on short-term relief like cash assistance, local farmers—many lacking seeds, fertiliser, and stable conditions—are struggling to grow enough food.
To prevent the crisis from deepening, it's essential to invest in local food production. Supporting Myanmar’s farmers isn’t just about agriculture—it’s a vital step toward ensuring long-term food security and protecting livelihoods in the face of ongoing instability.
