International humanitarian law: Global commitments versus local realities | VOICE Out Loud #38

In the latest VOICE Out Loud #38, Vittorio Infante of Oxfam International stresses the urgent need for stronger enforcement of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), particularly in Yemen, where years of conflict have led to a severe humanitarian crisis. The people of Yemen have been struggling to survive one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises, which was fully man-made.
Vittorio Infante highlights that, despite international commitments, IHL violations, including attacks on civilians and aid workers, continue unchecked. Oxfam’s collaboration with local civil society in Yemen demonstrates the importance of grassroots advocacy in pushing for IHL compliance and protecting civilians. Oxfam calls for concrete political action from EU Member States, including advocating for detained aid workers' release and restoring accountability mechanisms, to move beyond statements and ensure real protection for civilians.
