Fragility: the cost of inaction

The latest issue of the VOICE out loud magazine examines why sustained engagement in fragile contexts is essential, even amid political and financial pressures. Through concrete experiences from humanitarian and development actors, it highlights the human, economic and geopolitical costs of disengagement, and offers practical insights for operationalising the Humanitarian–Development–Peace Nexus in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

Contributions from CESVI, the Danish Refugee Council, Concern Worldwide, the International Rescue Committee, WeWorld, and Stichting Vluchteling bring together field-based perspectives on principled engagement, displacement, protection, and the realities of operating in highly fragile environments.
The publication contributes to VOICE’s ongoing advocacy to inform the EU’s integrated approach to fragility and broader EU engagement in crisis-affected and politically sensitive contexts, where fragility and displacement intersect.

In this issue you will find:

  • Practical examples of nexus programming in highly fragile environments
  • Reflections on displacement, protection and people-centred approaches
  • Perspectives on principled engagement amid shrinking humanitarian space
  • An interview with Barry Andrews, MEP, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development.
