Fragility and displacement: A people-centered approach to working across the nexus I VOICE Out Loud #40
The latest issue of VOICE Out Loud explores why sustained engagement in fragile contexts remains essential despite political and financial pressures. It highlights the human, economic and geopolitical costs of disengagement, while offering practical insights into implementing the Humanitarian–Development–Peace (HDP) Nexus.
This article by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) examines the growing link between fragility and forced displacement, driven by conflict, climate change and socio-economic instability in regions such as Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Drawing on its field experience, DRC presents its “Solutions from the Start” approach, which bridges emergency response with long-term, durable solutions by strengthening self-reliance, community resilience and social cohesion from the outset. The article also highlights the value of anticipatory action, using early interventions to reduce vulnerability and prevent further displacement.
DRC calls for the European Union to shift towards a people-centred, human rights-based approach, prioritising flexible funding, support for civil society, and community-led, resilience-focused solutions.
