The Mediterranean Sea: A Neglected Humanitarian Crisis? – Event wrap-up
2023 marked the deadliest year on record for migrants. The Mediterranean crossing remains the most perilous route, recording at least 3,129 deaths and disappearances in 2023. This tragic situation has led civil society organisations to describe the Mediterranean Sea as the cemetery of Europe, where international law is violated, and life-saving activities are often obstructed or criminalised. This pressing question was at the heart of VOICE's Event in June, which brought together experts to discuss this critical issue and the indispensable role of Search and Rescue (SAR) NGOs.
Among the speakers, we had the pleasure of hosting:
- Sergio Cecchini, Humanitarian Representation to the EU and NATO, Médecins Sans Frontières
- Sophie Beau, Co-founder and General Director, SOS Méditerranée
- Giuseppe Caccia, Founder, Mediterranea Saving Humans
- Vincent Cochetel, Special Envoy for the Western & Central Mediterranean situation, UNHCR
- Helena Ranchal, Director of International Operations, Médecins du Monde France
The discussions revolved around recognising the Mediterranean as a neglected humanitarian crisis and the application of fundamental humanitarian principles in this context. Panellists explored the importance of collaboration between SAR NGOs and the broader humanitarian sector, focusing on enhancing effectiveness and response. They addressed the funding for SAR operations and the criminalisation of SAR activities, highlighting the need for institutional support and recognition.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, moderated by Maria Groenewald, VOICE Director, allowing participants to engage directly with the panellists. This was followed by closing remarks from Dominic Crowley, VOICE President until June 2024, who reiterated the call for enhanced efforts to address the crisis.
As with previous events, we will publish a VOICE key highlights event report. Stay posted for detailed insights and recommendations from this panel, which will be disseminated across VOICE communication channels!
