Protecting children from violations of international humanitarian law and ensuring accountability | VOICE Out Loud #38

In the latest VOICE Out Loud #38, Advocacy Advisor Josina Bothe and Country Delegate Anna Paluszek from Terre des Hommes Italy Delegation in Palestine discuss the protection of children from violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and the urgent need to ensure accountability.
The article reveals a disturbing surge in violence against children in conflict zones. In 2023 only, violence against children in armed conflicts surged dramatically, with a 21% rise in grave violations and a 35% increase in killings and maiming, reflecting a shocking disregard for the children’s rights. It underscores how children’s rights are being systematically ignored through attacks on schools and hospitals, denial of humanitarian access, and the failure to distinguish between civilians and combatants. The article calls on the EU to take stronger and more decisive action. Under its legal and policy commitments, including the EU Guidelines on Children, the EU must ensure that violations of IHL do not go unpunished.
